I got a sheet of A3 and wrote each year
1973 - 0
1974 - 1
1975 - 2
Starting 1 through to 50
Recalling as much as I could from memory/history about each year.
- Where I lived.
- What I ate.
- What music/games I liked at the time.
- What I did.
- How I felt.
- As I got older where I worked.
- How much money did I have?
- Who was my friends/partner at the time.
- Notable (Good or bad) situations from each year.
Just as much as I could recall.
It’s an amazing activity that really gets your brain sparking and what was fascinating was the more I uncovered, the more I uncovered.
We are so busy being busy, we rarely stop to think, or process things.
What came through for me, is about personality, which is a “character you play” arguably shaped by decisions and life.
It’s quite clear to me in doing this excercise that good times come.
Good times go.
Bad times come.
Bad times go.
Good times come.
Good times go.
And it’s only looking back at your entire life can you see the profound impact seemingly innocuous decisions have had in shaping how you think, act and steer later life decision making.
Today. For a bit of fun.
Grab a piece of paper and write on the top.
Who am I?
And start like I did, year 1 throughout to where you are and during the day, as you recall it, write it.
If you do, you’ll be in a much better position to understand exactly who you are.
And why.
It's these threads of memories, experiences and choices that weave together to create “our life.”
Taking the time to reflect on “Who am I?” through the lens of our history is a simple yet powerful eye opening journey of self-discovery.
Reminding us that our story is a collection of moments, both good and bad, that have steered and shaped us into the lives, relationships and careers we have and into the individuals we are today.
Armed with this understanding will empower you to make better more intentional choices.
Please do this today, take this opportunity to reflect and explore your life story.
Or maybe you are too busy being too busy to stop and ‘waste time’ on this exercise.
If you want to be a more effective business person, answer the question
“Who am i?”
If you do, it’ll have a a massive and positive impact on you and you’ll be better placed to understand who you are today, along with the changes you can make to become better, tomorrow.
